I worked out most of idea for “Flash Frame” years ago, before moving to Denver, though I had other priorities come up in life besides recording music. I remember being in my rehearsal space during lockdown and recording the basic chords and vocal melody on my phone voice memo app, which has been my general process for coming up with ideas. Several moves later, I really was itching to finish what I started with the hope of gathering momentum for more creative outlets. There are so many distractions that can get in the way of the process of seeing through an idea, including focusing too much on “do I have all the right gear?!” etc., so I’m finding ways to declutter and to just focus on what’s really important.

I don’t usually share the intent of my songs, partially out of self-preservation but also because I like the idea of keeping all the space for interpretation as a listener. But I’ll say that for this one, the impetus was thinking about people who seem to be chewed up and spit out while chasing their big dreams and imagining what that is like. People are often quickly “edited out” when they no longer serve a use.

I tend to write rock songs, though I did really want to create a different arrangement style for this one. I leaned more on bass guitar in this song, and I really liked making the bridge section shift the tone of the song, to pull you in a slightly different feeling. I want to explore more different arrangements and styles for a few other songs on deck. This was all recorded at my home, but one of my great friends Adam Smith, from the LA band Kill My Coquette, applied his mixing expertise and helped this song come together.

For the few of you who do actually read this far, I hope you enjoy this song! I’m always trying to make something true to myself and to improve on each new effort. I’ll be working on putting together a showcase in the near future.
